Adidas Parley Edition

By  |

Hello my dudes, Karson back again to talk to you about Adidas and their new Adidas x Parley collection. Parley for the Oceans is an organization that was founded by Adidas to address threats to Earth’s oceans, namely plastic waste.

Has this ever happened to you? You’re just floating around the ocean and then you get trapped by a plastic net. You try to get it off but your short, flappy arms won’t reach. You’re stuck, dragging plastic by your neck, until either someone happens upon you and helps, or you die.

So no, that’s probably never happened to you. But why should it happen to our sea life? Almost nine million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and all of this trash has a devastating effect on sea life, and inevitably the whole ocean’s ecosystem.

This is where the Parley collection comes in. Parley has a strategy that they have dubbed AIR: Avoid, Intercept, and Redesign. The first step, Avoid, is to reduce usage of plastic, particularly single-use plastic like water bottles and take-away containers. Intercept is to stop plastic waste from making it to the ocean, and recycling or finding other uses for it. Redesign is to reuse the plastic in innovative, practical ways to make every living things’ life better.

Parley’s extensive collection of upcycled apparel uses Ocean Plastic, their specially designed recycled plastic, which is collected, processed, and repurposed into the kinds of Adidas products that we know and love, except better! By using recycled plastic collected from our oceans and beaches, Parley cuts down on the production of virgin plastic. Not only is there not more virgin plastic being created, the process of making Ocean Plastic creates less waste and uses less resources than traditional plastic.

I mean, who wants to go to a beach like this? Not to mention the fact that when plastic washes into the ocean it can sink to the bottom, break into a bunch of tiny pieces which are too difficult and dangerous to collect, which the fish then eat, which then hurt the fish and make them sick, and then we catch these fish and eat them, and then we end up inadvertently eating plastic due to our own collective addiction to the convenience of single-use plastic!

Change is coming. It’s a slow process, but Adidas and Parley are taking some big steps in helping us address the problem. And you can help! Whether it’s signing up for the mailing list to keep updated, donating money to the cause, or going out and volunteering yourself, you can do your part to help the ocean and help humanity. Visit https://takeaction.parley.tv/ to see what you can do. Even if you can’t donate or volunteer, just being informed and making others informed can make a world of difference.
