FOX Deportes includes fans in broadcast via zoom

Professional soccer games have been halted for quite some time now because of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the first professional leagues to return to play was, the Bundesliga.

The fixture that many soccer fans had been looking forward to the most was the match up between the two German powerhouses, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Due to Bundesliga protocal, fans are not able to attend games at the stadium. Broadcasters and fans lack the rush of adrenaline.

In an attempt to make the games feel more “normal”, the Signal Iduna Park stadium, the home stadium of Borussia Dortmund, decided to play the audio of fans cheering and chanting in previous games over the speakers. The audio makes the experience when watching a game at home much more enjoyable; rather than just hearing the players and coaches talking to each other on the field.

FOX Deportes decided to be the first network to attempt and include fans of both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund within their broadcast via Zoom. While watching the game on FOX Deportes, the screen would shift from live scenes to live stream and live reactions of both Bayern and Dortmund fans. The most exciting moment of the game came at the 43rd minute of play when Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich chipped the ball over the Dortmund keeper from just outside the 18-yard box and scored to put the game 1-0. This moment was even more exciting for fans watching the live broadcast from home because after the replay of the goal, the live reaction of the fans on the zoom call was shown on air. It showed the Bayern fans cheering with joy and the Dortmund fans in agony; all from the comfort of their own home.

Although the game ended with only a 1-0 win, this brought back a very important aspect that makes the sport so fun and entertaining. Fan involvement within a soccer game is something that many teams, stadiums, and television channels have tried to implement during matches in a variety of ways. FOX Deportes has made a leap forward in using technology through zoom to make the fans feel like they are a part of the game.  We are all forced to adapt due to the current situations we are faced with the coronavirus pandemic.

Although fans would much rather watch the game in the stadium and have their live reactions be heard by their team, FOX Deportes’ attempt to include fans through zoom is a step to what we could be looking at as the new “normal”.
